As a rising ion, Yb 3+ also allows a three-level laser scheme that leads to a low-level error and a longer fluorescence life. Yb 3+: CaF 2 can also provide high optical efficiency and high output power due to low thermal load. Recently, ytterbium doped alkaline-earth fluoride has been used mostly in diode-pumped femto-second lasers and amplifiers. Standard Czochralski or
Alkaline-soil fluorides, which can be easily grown using Bridgman technique, show great potential in wide transmission range, high damage threshold and low dispersion behavior.
